3: To me, the New Year's Eve Concert for Peace is the first way to start the year off right. Starting at 7 at the cathedral of St John the Divine located at 110th and Amsterdam. This year it will start with Aaron Copeland's Fanfare for the Common Man. The Cathedral will mark the ninetieth anniversary of Leonard Bernstein's birth with vocal excerpts from West Side Story. The late Maestro Bernstein inaugurated the annual New Year's Eve Concert for Peace more than a quarter century ago. Also on the program will be the world premiere of Songs of War, Remembrance, and Hope by Glen Cortese, conductor for the evening and Cathedral Artist-in-Residence. The new piece is inspired by the poetry of Walt Whitman and will be sung by internationally renowned singers Lauren Flanigan and Amy Burton. Among other guests from home and abroad will be John Musto, solo pianist with the New York Sinfonia performing Beethoven's Choral Fantasy. A: Art and the history of our country examined

"A New President Takes Command" is the new exhibit at The New-York Historical Society located at 170 Central Park West between 76th and 77th Street. This new exhibit examines the first 100 days of Franklin D. Roosevelt's first term in the White House. The exhibit avoids comparisons between the early stages of FDR's presidency and the expectations surrounding the new administration. Instead it consists of items selected from the permanent collection of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum, located in Hyde Park in Dutchess County. Last spring, that museum launched its own FDR exhibition, titled "Action, and Action Now: FDR's First 100 Days." The exhibit runs through next fall. The exhibit at the New-York Historical Society runs through May 3rd. Also on display: Nation at the Crossroads: The Great New York Debate over the Constitution, 1787-88 until January 25th, Grant and Lee in War and Peace through March 29th, If Elected: The Game of American Politics closing January 11th. F: Is for good face

What do Whitney Port, Kimora Lee Simmons, Stacy London, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Zoe Mclellan and other young hot new york celebrities have in common? Facials from Completely Bare. The entire experience was wonderful, and I plan to visit again when I'm next in the city. The entire treatment was just under an hour and a half.

S: Is for Sleep

The Christmas season is a time of sheer and utter exhaustion. This season I spent twenty days out in the freezing elements. Four days deadly sick with the stomach flu and I still managed to write for three publications, shop for gifts, send cards, bake cookies and eat my fill. Last night my body gave out. Why do we put ourselves through this fast grinding pace, this olympics of bodily endurance? For the love of the season, thats why! Christmas despite this is still my most favorite time of the year. This year we got snow. Despite the economic melt down store still decorated, trees were still adorned and love and good will still filled the air. It is a time we step out side ourselves and give to others, even when we know it will put a strain on our budget. I spent yesterday cleaning my room and clearing out my closet to give to those who don't have as much. It helps me start the new year fresh and spread the love even further. Last night after a filling meal I crashed until this afternoon. Now it is time to give to myself. We forget that during this season. It is not a selfish kind of thought but one of the simplest and most forgotten. For if we do not give to ourselves we are of no use to others and that is a F.A.C.T.

So like the saying goes and to all a good night!

T: Is for thoughts at Christmas

As 2.1 billion Christians in our world prepare to celebrate the birth of the most famous baby in history, I hope that all children find a place in our hearts and at our tables of plenty. At a time when the gap between rich and poor in our nation and the world is at its widest, an economic chasm driven by the greed of a few has jeopardized the lives and economic security of us all. I hope we will all raise a mighty voice to reset our nation’s moral and economic compass.

God help us to end poverty in our time:

The poverty of a child with too little to eat and no place to sleep, no air, sunlight and space to breathe.

The poverty of knowing a child suffers and not knowing what to do or how to get help because you don’t have a car or health insurance.

The poverty of working your fingers to the bone every day taking care of someone else’s children and neglecting your own, and still not being able to pay your bills.

The poverty of having a job that does not let you afford a stable place to live and being terrified you’ll become homeless.

The poverty of losing your job because you cannot find reliable child care or transportation to work.

The poverty of working all your life caring for others and having to start all over again caring for the grandchildren you love.

The poverty of having too much and sharing too little and having the burden of nothing to carry.

The poverty of convenient deaf, dumb and blindness leading to indifference to others.

The poverty of believing in nothing, standing for nothing, sharing nothing, sacrificing nothing, struggling for nothing.

The poverty of greed for more and more and more, ignoring, blaming and exploiting the needy, and taking from the weak to please the strong.

The poverty of fear that keeps you from doing the thing you think is right.
The poverty of despair and cynicism.

God help us end poverty in our time and make it a F.A.C.T.

C: Is for Comfort and Joy

Gift #24 comes from the heart. It is the gift we can give all year long and it is more precious than cash.

Gift #24: The gift of time: Spending time, quality time is the greatest gift we can give each other. In this frenzied world just giving of ourselves is the most treasured commodity. I have friends this year I haven't seen in months. My schedule, their schedules, inconvenience of area, you name it has kept us apart. Kids miss their parents because of work and parents have missed their kids plays, concerts, games and growing because they have been trying to provide. Sometimes we lose out on life because we are trying to hard to get ahead or in this time and age just keeping our heads above water.

A: Is for Art where we live

We live in a city where art is at our doorsteps gift #23 is the gift that culture brings.

Gift #23: Museums: First there's the Met: Until February 16th the Italian Renaissance is celebrating love and marriage. At the MoMA Van Gogh's Colors of the Night takes precedence until January 5th. This exhibition presents new insight into Van Gogh's depictions of night landscapes, interior scenes, and the effects of both gaslight and natural light on their surroundings. Representing all periods of the artist's career, the exhibition comprises of over two dozen works of superlative quality—several of which have never been seen together, even though they were very clearly conceived with each other in mind.

The Natural History Museum celebrates Darwin's ideas and their impact for his 200th birthday in 2009. Discover the man and the revolutionary theory that changed our understanding of the world. See incredible, revealing and rare exhibits, some on display for the first time. A: Is for artistic genius

Gift #16 is a gas and one of the most delightful show to hit Broadway in years.

#16 SHREK THE MUSICAL: From the moment that Julie Andrews tells you to turn off your cell phones to the cast singing "Let your Freak Hang Out" you are in for a love affair with musical theatre. Shrek reminds us of why we fall in love with musicals. The book by William Steig and book and lyrics by David Lindsay Abaire is funny, touching and better than the movie. After seeing the show I asked the kids who where there what they thought and they all agreed, they wanted to see more shows and they wanted to see Shrek again. That is the kind of recommendations that theatre needs to survive, I personally want to see Shrek again because I missed some of the lines because I was laughing so hard. This show is irreverent and makes fun of everything. There are lots of insider theatre jokes, fairy tale jokes, nursery rhyme jokes, bodily function jokes and the list goes on. The choreography by Josh Prince is innovative and clever. I especially like the tap dancing rats. Jeanine Tesori's music is catchy thought it took me a couple of songs to get into it, but I found myself singing "Morning Person" two days later. I especially liked her dance music and the orchestrations and incidental music by Tim Weil will have you unable to sit still and dancing in you seat. Jason Moore's direction keeps this fast paced without losing the heart of the show. Their were several times when this show was so touching I choked up. The sets and costumes, lighting and illusions are done to perfection and created the perfect world in which to become absorbed in. Then there is the cast: Brian D'Arcy James far surpasses his costume and is so believable you want to jump up onto the stage and comfort him. His vocals have a powerhouse quality yet the emotionality of what is being portrayed comes through and he is Shrek, that lovable green ogre we all fell in love with. He is in a word endearing. Sutton Foster as Princess Fiona is a triple threat and we feel for her and relate to all her quirkiness. Daniel Breaker as the donkey, has never seen the film which is amazing considering he is better than Eddie Murphy. This donkey is one part singer ala Stevie Wonder, one part Little Richard and all utterly fabulous. Christopher Sieber has the scene stealing role and he embodies Lord Farquaad on his knees with a flip of his hair and completely self absorbed. Do I hear Tony or should I say Tony's? The ensemble is one of the best ever cast. There is not one who doesn't stand out in one way or another. Shrek the musical has heart, it is a musical for our time and that is a show stopping F.A.C.T.

F: is for Sustainable Fashion

Sustainable style is hot on the global fashion circuit so it is gifts #14 and 15 on my list.

T: Is for brilliance in the theatre

There is nothing like a live performance. Seeing brilliance illuminated on stage is breath taking. Gift #11 is the gift of theatre.

#9: The Seagull: Kristin Scott Thomas's performance is a Tony Award wining performance. She is my prediction for the 2009 Best Actress in a play. She has already won the Oliver in London. The Royal Court Theatre production at the Walter Kerr Theatre is... exquisite. This all-too-limited run leaves Dec. 21. If you're near Manhattan between now and then, beg, borrow, or steal tickets. In this production it is the actresses, which eclipse the men’s performances and lead us down a vivid path of psychological study. Under the direction of Ian Rickson, nothing is rushed so the emotions that lead up to the second act are thoroughly set-up. Kristen Scott Thomas, as the actress Arkadina, gives this self-involved diva the selfishness that demands applause. Pacing like a cheetah she is ready to rip apart anyone who doesn’t cater to her narcism. In Thomas’s performance we see the anger, the guilt and the actress afraid to lose her place at the top, no matter what it costs.

His unique trade became her daily life as she joined him in taking Carnivale by storm. Her work in clay sculpture together with leather originated a leather sculpture bag. Since moving to New York 1999, her studies have taken the form of improvisational theatre, Bel Canto voice, and a unique form of dance performed in the basement of St. John’s cathedral. It has been her passion for capturing “street paintings” with the camera that has dominated her focus. Now integrating this work with her poetry, she’s formulated a species of performance that brings the photography to life in time with an intensely visual sung dialogue. Tis the season to write my list for the 24 most have items. Last year I named 12 but this year, I have so many to put on my list that I need all 24 days. The first item to make it is one I named last year. I went to a performance for a show called "Lamppost Reunion" which was also a benefit for "Books For Kids" and at the after party, there it was being served and it brought back all the reasons I loved it in the 1st place. It answers the question of what do I bring to show my hosts I care, as well as how do you cleanse you palate in between those courses to savor the next item? How do you end a perfect meal?

T: Is for Thankful

As we join in with family and friends to enjoy the tradition of Thanksgiving, I realize we have a lot to be thankful for. We have a President who promises change. This is a President who with his wife and daughters last night passed out food to the needy at a church in Chicago. He wished those who attended a "happy thanksgiving" and told everyone "you can call me Barack." He told reporters that he wanted the girls "to learn the importance of how fortunate they are, and to make sure they're giving back." Did you know President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving Day a federal holiday in 1863, only months after the bloodshed of Gettysburg claimed 51,000 Union and Confederate casualties. Lincoln found solace in our nation's promise even during our darkest hours, so shouldn't we?

In New York we have reason to be grateful for not being hit by fires like California or floods or hurricanes. We have had it pretty easy.

I am appreciative of things like family and friends, yet I'm also grateful for something less thought about: I am thankful for life. When we hear about the bombings and senseless killings in India and other countries, life is where our concerns lies. This holiday reminds us to count our blessings.

We should begin every morning, by remembering at least five things to be thankful for. Come up with things that are such a parts of your everyday life that you sometimes forget are blessings. I give thanks for clean water to drink, for having all 10 fingers in working condition, for the work of poets who remind me to celebrate life. Life is layers of gifts. Even our hardships, trials, adversity and suffering. We grow the most, and find strength the most, when times are tough.

If we keep this in the forefront of our minds, what lies ahead will not be so tough and that is a F.A.C.T.

A: Is for Artistry in song

Sunday night at Madison Square Gardens heavily shrouded in black, arms outstretched, Diva Sarah Brightman made her entrance. Off came the shroud and clad in a to die for, red bustee dress she began to thrill. By the end of the hour and 50-minute theatrical experience, I was not sure what was more impressive, the costumes, the holographic sets or the facts that the ingenue from Phantom of the Opera at 48 was still soaring. This was a concert to please all current fans and gather a new retinue. The concert included "You Take My Breath Away" from Harem, Three numbers from her previous album Symphony including a duet with the rich voice of Mario Frangoulis who also joined her for "Phantom of the Opera" and from her new Winter Symphony album a duet with silver voiced tenor Fernando Lima. Cover tunes like "Dust in the Wind" and "It's a Beautiful World" got new takes that were refreshing. The sets, were the very latest in stage technology, and to say the least, were impressive. Holographic 3-D worlds were projected as gothic castles with dragons and magicians melted into forests filled with stars, into enchanted glens with butterflies and even gigantic Mary Cassatt like poppies. I loved the Busby Berkeley effect as Sarah and her eight dancers lay floating through space swimming. I especially thought it was hysterical when Ms. Brightman appeared as Little Red Riding Hood pedaling a stationary bicycle like Dorothy through a virtual forest, pursued by holographic rats on bikes as "The Nutcracker Suite" played. Her outfits were divine except for the white shoes and very reminiscent of Vivienne Westwood. This soprano is throughly busy what with a film, a new album and a concert tour. Sarah Brightman makes the saying, "Your not getting older your getting better baby" a F.A.C.T.

F: Is for Food for Thought

Thanksgiving is coming and nerves are starting as unravel and cook books are being searched. If you are looking for a last minute recipe? This came to me from Rioja Wines. Try Riojan Sausage Stuffing. I know I will be.

Ingredients: (Yield: 6 servings)

2 qts bread, cut into cubes and left out to dry or toasted
1 lb. bulk Chorizo, sliced and cooked
1/2 lb. butter
1/4 cup peanut oil
1/2 lb. bacon, diced
2 large onions, diced
6 stalks celery, diced
2 qts. chicken or turkey stock
1T fresh picked thyme
1T fresh chopped sage Bay Leaf
1/2 lb. cooked Serrano ham, diced
1T. poultry seasoning
1/4 cup maple syrup
Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
Instructions:

Prepare the bread cubes. Save old bread for stuffing. The bread should be as dry as possible to better absorb the juices.
Break up the sausage and roast it in the oven until just cooked. Pour off any excess fat. Set aside until ready to use.
To make the stuffing: Heat the butter and the oil in a heavy based pan.
Add the bacon and cook until crisp.
Stir in the onions and celery and cook until soft.
Add the cooked Chorizo, the chicken stock and the herbs and cook until the flavors have melded and the stock has reduced by nearly half.
Taste the stock and if it is filled with the flavors of the herbs and the pork then it's ready.
Stir in the bread cubes and the Serrano ham.
Remove from the heat.
Season with the maple syrup, poultry seasoning, salt and pepper. Go gently with the salt at first since the bacon, Chorizo and ham are all salty.
The stuffing should be a little moist as it will be baked in the turkey cavity or in a casserole before serving. Just add more stock or more bread as needed. Top with a couple of pads of butter and cover before baking.

T: IS FOR GOOD OLD BOY TEAMWORK

The incoming Democratic freshmen of the House of Representatives are about to get their first lesson in good old boy politics. Unfortunately, the example being set by Reps. John Dingell (D-Mich.) and Nick Rahall (D-W.Va.) is exactly the kind of initiation these new members don’t need.

Dingell and Rahall are hosted a Washington, D.C., fundraiser Wednesday to help the newly elected Democrats retire their campaign debt. According to the invitation, political action committees (PACs) are encouraged to contribute $20,000 apiece, while individuals are asked to consider chipping in $10,000 each.
What’s wrong with this picture? Before they’re even sworn in, these 23 lawmakers will be exposed to the quid pro quo relationship between elected officials and their wealthy benefactors – lobbyists and corporate power brokers. It’s a potentially corrupting cycle of influence-peddling that could largely be done away with if we had public financing of congressional elections.

As for Dingell, who is facing a serious challenge from Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) for his powerful chairmanship of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, he should be aware how suspect it looks for him to be currying favor with incoming legislators the same week the freshmen and sitting members will decide his fate. We should also note that like many of their fellow members of Congress, Waxman and Dingell contributed to the election campaigns of the new lawmakers, though, according to Congressional Quarterly, Waxman gave more through his LA PAC than Dingell did through his Wolverine PAC.
If voters were clear about anything this past election, it was that they are tired of Washington’s business-as-usual style of politics. It’s time for a change. These freshmen should graciously decline Dingell and Rahall’s hospitality and, instead, pledge to sign on to public financing legislation.

A: Is for Art being Honored

Mayor Bloomberg presented the 2008 Mayor's Awards for Arts & Culture to six individuals and organizations in celebration of their outstanding contributions to New York City's cultural life. The 2008 NYC Handel Medallion, New York City's highest award for achievement in the arts, to playwright and Bronx native Neil Simon.

The event, held at the world famous Apollo Theater, was hosted by Ugly Betty star Vanessa Williams and featured live performances by the Queens Jazz Orchestra, an American Sign Language poet and his students, the cast of Hair, actor Matthew Broderick, and Statler & Waldorf of the Muppets.

The Mayor's Awards for Arts and Culture were created in 1974 by the Cultural Affairs Advisory Commission to honor individuals and organizations who have made significant contributions to the cultural life of New York City.

Housing Works kicked off their fifth-annual Fashion for Action fundraiser last night at the Rubin Museum of Art on 150 West 17th Street. Chaired this year by Marc Jacobs, the event started with a sample sale of top brand designers and silent auction to raise money for HIV/AIDS charities. $1.63 million dollars of merchandise was donated by a handful of designers like Diane Von Furstenbeg, Theory, Dolce and Gabanna, Calvin Klein and more, and it was available at 50 to 70% off retail. S: Is for Checking before Speaking or Writing!

Tonight, I received this from a very trusted friend. Knowing how companies, especially credit card companies are hiking up the rates, I thought this was true. I immediately sent this to my friends and then I decided I could do even more and add it to today's column. Looking for a picture I typed in cookies and Neiman-Marcus and I found out, this is an urban legend. To my friends Bob and Gary, yes I should of checked first and yes, I am a friend to the underdog. To my readers this looks like a good recipe and supposably it is from Mrs. Fields. We should all be a little more cautious and check things out before we forward. You never know who you could be hurting.

Letter: A little background: Neiman-Marcus, if you don't know already, is a very
expensive store; ie., they sell your typical $8.00 T-shirt for $50.00.

Let's let them have it! THIS IS A TRUE STORY!
My daughter and I had just finished a salad at Neiman-Marcus Cafe in Dallas & decided to have a small dessert. Because both of us are such cookie lovers, we decided to try the "Neiman-Marcus Cookie". It was so excellent that I asked if they would give me the recipe and the waitress said with a small frown "I'm afraid not." Well" I said, "would you let me buy the recipe?"

With a cute smile, she said YES". I asked how much and she responded, "Only two fifty, it's a great deal!" I said with approval, "just add it to my tab".. Thirty days later, I received my VISA statement from Neiman-Marcus and it was $285.00. I looked again and remembered I had only spent $9.95 for two salads and about $20.00 for a scarf. As I glanced at the bottom of the statement, it said, "Cookie Recipe - $250.00". That's outrageous!!!

I called Neiman's Accounting Dept. and told them that the waitress said it was "two-fifty," which clearly does not mean "two hundred and fifty dollars" by any POSSIBLE interpretation of the phrase. Neiman-Marcus refused to budge.. They would not refund my money, because according to them, "What the waitress told you is not our problem. You have already seen the recipe - we absolutely will not refund your money at this point." I explained to her the criminal statutes which govern fraud in Texas. I threatened to refer them to the Better Business Bureau and the State's Attorney General for engaging in fraud. I was basically told, "Do what you want, we dont give a damn, and we're not refunding your money." I waited a moment, thinking of how I could get even,or even try to get any of my money back. I just said, "Okay, you folks got my $250.00, and now I'm going to have $250.00 worth of fun."

I told her that I was going to see to it that every cookie lover in the United States with an e-mail account has a $250.00 cookie recipe from Neiman-Marcus... for free..She replied, "I wish you wouldn't do this" I said, "Well you should have thought of that before you ripped me off", and slammed down the phone on her.. So, here it is!!! Please, please, please pass it on to everyone you can possibly think of. I paid $250.00 dollars for this... I don't want Neiman-Marcus to ever get another penny off of this recipe....

(Recipe may be halved): 2 cups butter
4 cups flour
2 tsp. baking soda
2 cups granulated sugar
2 cups brown sugar
5 cups blended oatmeal (measure oatmeal and blend in blender to a fine powder)
24 oz. chocolate chips
1 tsp. salt
1 8 oz. Hershey bar (grated)
4 eggs
2 tsp. baking powder
3 cups chopped nuts (your choice)
2 tsp. vanilla
Cream the butter and both sugars. Add eggs and vanilla; mix together with flour, oatmeal, salt, baking powder, and soda. Add chocolate chips, Hershey bar and nuts. Roll into balls and place two inches apart on a cookie sheet..Bake for 10 minutes at 375 degrees. Makes 112 cookies.. Have Fun!!!

A lesson learned and that is a F.A.C.T.

T: Is for Tell Her To Go Away!

With Obama as our newly elected President and the way he is taking charge, I wasn't sure what I wanted to write. Things looked as if they were slowly righting themselves and then I saw a CNN article and I knew what I had to say. Somebody, anybody, please make Sarah Palin go away. I was hoping after the election she would be off the front page until after it was proven that Trig Palin, could be her daughter Bristol's, in which case I could say "see I told you so!" Just when I think she can not stoop any lower an article came out on CNN that I have to comment on. First she states she should of done more interviews. Ms. Palin do you not realize the 79% of women voted you off. We don't like you. The magazines tried to say we were jealous of you. Were not jealous. How could we be, when you are so uneducated? I state this because you don't even get that if you taught your daughter about sex education you would not be a grandmother. You state "you would be honored to help out Obama and his new administration -- even though he did hang around with an "unrepentant domestic terrorist." First of all he is President elect Obama. 2nd do your homework. How can you make such statements without proof. This is slander. Why is nobody bringing her up on charges and why is she being allowed to continue this tirade? You claim you can help him with energy and services for special-needs children. Why did you not do this as Governor or Mayor. I did do my homework and you took money away from disabled families until Trig was born, just like you charged women for rape kits. Are we suppose to believe because a disabled child was born into your household you had a change of heart? As for energy maybe you need to take a class from Al Gore. A new poll suggests that just less than half of all Americans have a favorable view of Palin and they are dropping more as each day goes by. Have you given back the clothing? You were wearing it still in Alaska upon your return.

I don't want to be irritated by Ms. Palin anymore. When John McCain pick her she was an obscure Governor, way can't she go back to where she came from, back to oblivion. We need to move forward as a country. Ms Palin, you were not even allowed to make a concession speech because your running mate wanted to bow out with grace and knew you could not. Maybe you should let that show you the F.A.C.T.S.

C: C is for Cosmetics and Community!

L'Oreal, Shesido and women from FIT gathered at Lord and Taylor last week to network and network they did thanks to an organization called Cosmetic Executive Women (CEW). Here young Executive members are invited for an exclusive events, to make connections that will help them move up the ladder. Industry peers chatted while enjoying a special wine tasting from Barefoot Wine & Bubbly. Clarins offered mini facials as Chanel, Clinique, Dior, Estée Lauder, Lancome, Nars Cosmetics, YSL, or the brand of your choice gave complimentary makeovers. What was so great about that is you had a chance to sample the products currently on sale and get to know your compition. Mixing beauty, business and pleasure, the way to earn a $25 Lord & Taylor gift card was to gather 5 business cards from those who attended. It was a win, win. The Young Executive Events have been created to help these women cultivate contacts and make connections with other CEW members at the same stage of their careers. For my five cards which ended up being seven I met Sales Operators Marissa and Ashley from Shesido, Amada who was aSenior Management Developer for L'Oreal, Carolina head of a cosmetic and marketing company, Laqueta from SoftSheen a division of L'Oreal, Michele from Brand Building communication and Danielle head of PR for Lord and Taylor. When I interviewed each of these interesting women I asked the same questions. How did you hear about this? How long have you been coming? And would you recommend this and why? All of these women answered the same. They heard from a friend who brought them, it was 2 years ago and they have all meet others who have mentored them and they have since mentored. What a credit, to stefanie schwalb and the other creators of CEW for promoting such community withi the cosmetic industry. When I left there was also a swag bag that was overflowing with products. CEW's next event is Friday, December 12th at the Waldorf Astoria. It is the 2008 BEAUTY OF GIVING LUNCHEON & LIVE AUCTION benefiting Cosmetic Executive Women Foundation and Honoring Estee lauder. This organization also has a charitable arm that supports Cancer and Careers, an independent initiative that provides an interactive resource and community for working women with any type of cancer.
